- I understand this. I am trying to point out that it will NEVER fallback.
- It connects at 28.8+ or not at all. It will not throttle back on it's
- own.

-
- I have tried with many types: Motorola, PPI, USR etc. (Old and new. This
- happens even connecting to the V.34+ Couriers, I get 28.8+ on clean lines
- and a reset on less than perfect lines. These less than perfect lines will
- negotiate a 26.4 to 28.8 originating with another brand). The problems is
- how the Sportster is dealing with the line quality, not what the
- modem on the other end is.

-
- The configuration you saw was the default atz4 which works well on clean
- lines. I have no "active" configuration as I have to alter it all the
- time depending on the line quality to get a connection. The only setting
- I alter is the ats33 (aka ats54).

-
- I KNOW that it's solely USR's problem. I HAVE done my homework! I have
- done countless tests originating and receiving with many types of modems.
- I can quote binary switch settings off the top of my head for USRs. I cannot
- do this for the PPI modems I use as they have worked flawlessly out of the
- box without the need to piss around endlessly with settings. Don't
- get me wrong either. I used to love USR. I never had a moment of
- trouble with my 14.4 USRs, both Sportster and Courier. It's just that
- they can't seem to make a good V.34 Sportster. Based on the number of
- complaints here on comp.dcom.modems and the problems many of my friends
- have had I know I am not alone.
